preservation, and exhibition of diverse cultural and historical traditions, focusing on every aspect of West Virginia history, culture, art, paleontology, archaeology, and geology from all geographic regions representing the people, land, and industries. There is a FREE museum, and parking is metered, having very high ratings by reviews. This next attraction is very close to this last one, and it's the State Capitol and the Governor's Mansion on the Kanawha River. Tours of both of these, I believe, are FREE, and all information is on their website as far as parking and length of tours.

At the Lost World Caverns attraction, you descend 120 feet below the Earth's surface into a vast wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites, which was discovered in 1942, and is a truly magical place for explorers of all ages. It takes approximately 45 minutes to walk through. They offer self-guided tours so you can take your time to explore the cavern at your own pace; remember to

One of the state's most photographed sights is the soaring New River Bridge, the longest steel span in the hemisphere and the nation's third-highest, 876 feet above the canyon floor. The National Park Service maintains 70,000 acres of parklands along the river, and at Hawk's Nest State Park, you can ride an aerial tramway into the bottom of the New River Gorge, a prime spot for whitewater rafting.

That place also has the Fayette County's "Bridge Day," which is on the third Saturday of every October. It's a one-day annual event that attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators and hundreds of base jumpers. On this day, base jumpers can legally jump off the bridge for 6 hours, weather permitting, with parachutes.

South of New River Gorge National River at Bluestone State Park, there is hiking, fishing, camping, and boating on the large lake behind the Bluestone Dam. Anyway, they have 37 state parks, some of which are FREE; others charge a very low fee. This state has some of the most scenic state parks I've ever seen, and also, this place is very highly rated as being one of the most visited places in the state. This next indoor attraction is the West Virginia State Museum—located in the Cultural Center at 1900 Kanawha Blvd E. Capitol Complex, Charleston. This interesting museum traces the history of West Virginia through a series of exhibits containing everything from an extensive collection of antique hats donated by a local school teacher to the telescope George Washington used to survey lands within the state.
