Communities South Cooking Lake • The first people to inhabit the South Cooking Lake area were the Cree, Blackfoot, and Sarcee. The name originally came from O-Pi- Mi-W- SIOOSAKYAKN meaning, “Here’s Where We Cook Lake” or Cooking Lake. • The water was clear and high. The beaches were white sand the forest thick and tall. Cooking Lake was fished commercially until 1926. Large numbers of buffalo, lynx, fox, mink, muskrat, elk, deer, moose, wolves, coyotes and black bears used to room. Today there is a day-use park, which is a great place for family picnics and walking. • The South Cooking Lake Community League was created in 1923 to encourage community members to get to know each other better and to create a stronger community for families and future generations. www.strathcona.ca/south-cooking- lake The South Cooking Lake community hall was completed in 1974 and added a senior’s centre in 1993. The community league hosts numerous programs and events each year. They also host the annual Trail Days.
