Attractions to Discover Cooking Lake – Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation, Wildlife and Grazing Area is located 23 km east of Sherwood Park, immediately south of Elk Island National Park. This 97-square kilometre (37-square miles) area is a provincial multiuse site. The annual Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival is billed as the largest classic cross-country ski event in North America and is held at Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area. The area integrates cattle grazing, wildlife management and public outdoor recreation activities such as cross-country skiing, mountainbiking, canoeing, hiking, picnicking, horseback riding and snowmobiling. Ministik Bird Sanctuary Ministik was the first bird sanctuary established in Alberta in 1911. Its 20,000-acred terrain provides for a diverse array of habitat including an excellent undisturbed example of mixed wood boreal forest. Ministik Lake is home to many threatened migratory birds such as the American white pelican and blue heron.
