Jiaozuo City in the northwest of Henan Province is a picturesque area covered with mountains, plains, hills and lowlands, Yuntai Mountain, more commonly referred to as Yuntaishan, is located in Xiuwu County. Considered a Buddhist and Tao pilgrimage spot, the park is where nature lovers also make their pilgrimage. It was included in UNESCO’s first list of world geological parks, and is the only one in Henan Province with a host of titles including National Forest Park, National Geologic Park and AAAAA level scenic spot. Catch a bus from Tongma Bus Station in Jiaozuo where buses leave every 30 minutes during the tourist season for the half-hour ride. Plan for an overnight trip as most walks can last for more than half the day. The park ticket is valid for two days but note, it’s a one-way ticket, so you can’t return to a spot you’ve already visited.
Yuntaishan is known for the Hongshi Gorge, a natural wonder that gets its name from the sandstone rock formations. Also quite spectacular is Fenglin Gorge, sometimes referred to as Qunying Lake or the Yuntai immortal pool.
