So is it worth it?
With an exception of IITs and NITs, a bachelor’ s degree is hardly recognized as a worthy to be a qualified engineer. It is always advised to go for masters and ensure you have gained expertise and have some thorough knowledge about any specific branch of civil engineering.
In project management however, it is recommend that you consider gaining practical experience in projects. This would help put a lot of things that you would learn in your MS program in perspective. There are several differences between theory and practice when it comes to project management, so gaining realworld experience will help you a great deal.
Employability
Do you like building and design, but think architecture involves too much drawing? Or that civil engineering involves too much math and carpentry involves too much manual labor? Then construction project management is for you.
While the job market was hit hard in the mid- 2000s, hiring is now on the rise. Employment is expected to grow 16 % between 2012-2022, faster than the average for all occupations and including more than 78,000 new construction manager jobs. While the employable percentage of graduate level engineer steers up to 30 %, project management degree would ensure this rate to almost 85 % employability.
Who can apply and how to apply?
If you are in final year of your graduation, its time you make up your mind about your future moves. There are a lot of opportunities to look after, a lot of Government Exams to qualify and a number of companies to apply for.
But if you are certain about grooming a Construction Manager out of you, there are ample options for you. First option and the cheaper option comes via hard work. All you have to do is crack the GATE and secure admirable rank and get into the IITs offering courses in Building Technology and Construction Management.
National Institute of Construction Management and Research, Pune( NICMAR) is one of the most renowned and reputed institute which provides PG Programs in different streams.
RICS( Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) on the other hand offers MBA in various streams like MBA in Real Estate & Urban Infrastructure, Construction Project Management, Construction Economics & Quantity Surveying & Infrastructure Management.
Other options would be persuing the same courses from other private universities, but these are not generally suggested.
If you are financially well equipped, you may peruse MS in foreign universities. There are different rankings of international universities, you may consider. Choose the right college and country for you. TOEFL and IELTS are essentially asked to be cleared and GRE is needed in US.
Due to the high demand of competent professionals in this field, those with Master in Civil Engineering degrees have excellent career opportunities.
