The Issue
You Google down, “Scope of
Civil Engineering” and you
would see a plenty of results
claiming that this specific
branch is quite promising when
it comes to employment and
salary package. While on the
other hand when you search
“Unemployment
in
Civil
Engineering”, you won’t get a
single worthy link to let you
understands the anatomy of
Civil Engineer’s employment in
our field.
But there is an alarming bell
that is ringing and very
fortunate are able to listen to it.
Follow the popular saying that,
“Grass on the other end is
always
greener”
seems
legitimate for Civil Engineering
students.
Of course India is doing well in
producing large number of
engineers each year. But the
question arises that are they
employable? According to
National Employability Report
published by a private firm
based in Gurgaon, only 7.5% of
graduates are employable.
International
Labour
Organization estimates over 75
million young people are
unemployed across the world.
Paradoxically, 57% of the
employers worldwide are not
able to find entry-level skilled
workforce.
The situation is no different in
India. In fact it will require a lot
of effort to avoid a talent
crunch
and
ironically,
unemployment crisis in next 510 years. Another McKinsey
report by McKinsey Global
Institute says that if the current
trend continues it is estimated
that India will have low skill
work
force
of
about
3,00,00,000 human resource
and probably no Jobs for them.
Let’s take a look at the
chronology of civil engineering

watching. During the early 2000
we saw an unexpected demand
of civil engineers in the market
where the supply was less than
the demand. Every student was
heading for the CS-IT as India
was emerging as one of the
leading IT Centres. This demand
in Civil Engineering created an
opportunity for the students
who
were
half-heartedly
tending to join CS/IT. Colleges
where Civil admissions were no
more than 20-30 saw a major
influx in admissions and within
few years they were getting
donations for the management
seats in Civil Engineering. This
was where the problem begun.
A sudden influx of civil
engineering students with substandard teaching facilities
changed student’s excitement
into burden. With the passage
of time teaching standard got
better but vacancies are still at
large. The root cause of the
problem is the degrading
standard of education. Private
colleges are being established
at a great rate and they offer
luring offers to the students to
join their college for World
Class Education facilities. They
would somehow manage to

celebrity or a foreigner or call

themselves and here you go. It
became one of the reputed
colleges.
Now since a large section of
quality engineers were already
hired, colleges saw an
immense shortage of teaching
faculty. This void was filled by
the just graduated student with
no experience. These pass outs
never had the opportunity to
do any sort of R&D before
teaching the students who
were merely a year younger to
them. So our engineering
graduates were being taught by
the teachers/professors who
were not able to handle the
curiosity of any student.
Students were left on their own
& this affected the mind-set of
the student. Now they were not
keen to learn civil engineering,
