From porch parties to barn murals to art gallery alleys and more , Madison County is going all out for its year-long bicentennial celebration , and the fun isn ’ t over yet ! The communities of Pendleton , Anderson and Elwood have each pitched in to create memorable events to honor the county ’ s 200th birthday — and some of those projects will continue to beautify the area for many years to come .
PENDLETON This past August , visitors were invited to take part in the Pendleton Porch Party to meet the owners of 15 homes in the Downtown Historic District who shared their memories of Pendleton . Porch decorations included dioramas showcasing the history of the homes and the city , and guests enjoyed refreshments while hearing about downtown Pendleton ’ s beginnings . Many also took advantage of the opportunity to take the Historic
Marker Walking Tour to view more downtown landmarks .
A new landmark — the Madison County Bicentennial Mural — was unveiled on August 18 , 2023 . Applied to the small duck barn along Falls Park Drive , the mural features a modern and colorful take on the words “ Fall in love with Pendleton .”
Conceptualized by Christi Kelly , the mural was designed by Brock Forrer and installed by The Sign-Age . Funded by the Madison County Bicentennial Committee , the site location of the mural is intended to enable those taking photographs to capture the tableau of the falls in the background .
“ When people think of Pendleton ’ s contribution to the landscape of Madison County , they think immediately of Falls Park and the National Register Historic District with its diversity of styles ,” said Amy Turner , Pendleton site coordinator , Madison County Bicentennial Steering Committee . “ We wanted to showcase these areas in particular as we
