back living on the farm and help with all areas of the farming operations . Mason , our middle son , works for Red Gold and still helps on evenings and weekends . Our youngest , Miller , is a sophomore at Purdue and has also always helped with the pumpkin patch and on the farm .”
Several other friends and family members , including both of the couple ’ s parents , help the Smiths with the pumpkin patch .
The family-friendly operation attracts folks from all over central Indiana with the promise of good old-fashioned fall fun . Depending on the weather in October , they average between 7,000 and 10,000 visitors who take advantage of the farm ’ s activities .
“ We have a full playground for the kids to enjoy and a petting zoo with our favorite animal friends : donkeys , cows , goats and rabbits ,” Neal says . “ Yummy food , including fresh-cooked burgers , hot nachos and delicious caramel apples . Pony rides , hayrides and a corn maze .”
Pendleton resident Liz Flinn looks forward to visiting the pumpkin patch each fall with her husband , Korey , and their son , Liam .
“ It ' s always such a great day of fall fun ,” Liz says . “ We love the corn maze , and I love that I can get pumpkins and hay bales to decorate my front porch .”
In addition to the corn maze , the Flinns enjoy the variety of activities offered on the farm .
“ Liam loves seeing the animals in the petting zoo , and the hayride is really fun , too ,” Liz explains . “ I like that most things are included in the cost of admission , so you don ' t have to pay for each thing individually . Also , they sometimes have live music , which I love !”
The farm also offers pre-scheduled field trips for schools each weekday from the last week of September through Halloween . The field trips fill up fast , Neal warns .
For him , the most rewarding part of running the pumpkin patch each fall is hearing all the positive comments from new and repeat visitors .
“ We strive to be a valuable part of our community and the county ,” Neal explains . “ And we hope that we help educate visitors about the vast areas of agriculture and where their food , fiber and fuel are produced , while giving them an enjoyable experience and day on our working family farm .”
