MUHAMMADU BUHARI AN EXEMPLARY LEADER H.E. Muhammadu Buhari got elected in 2015 in a historic presidential election. President Buhari joined the Army of Nigeria in 1961 when he attended the Nigerian University of Military Instruction, which later came to be called the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna. Military service teaches one certain skills such as integrity, discipline honesty, selfl essness, humility and more. (Kolditz, 2009). As a former military man, President Buhari exhibits these qualities: he is known to be honest, a disciplinarian, incorruptible and a humble man who lives simply. Also, as a former military ruler of the country, he already learned other skills on how to govern the country. His experiences and competencies all come together to form the skills he needs (Skills approach) to handle the diff erent challenges facing him as the current President of Nigeria. (Situational approach). President Buhari’s leadership style has been based on matching his skills (from his military experiences and competencies) to the challenges (diff erent situations) in the country. He has been fi ghting corruption, utilising his disciplinarian skill and has adopted a style of a “telling” or “directing” to deal with corrupt offi cials in the country both past and present. This behaviour can be seen to be in response to the expectation of country when they elected him; Nigerian showed a high commitment to this cause but a low ability to carry it out: he was the best candidate to handle this.
