SPOTLIGHT
Peru is a founding member of the International Solar Alliance and
has a key interest to participate in its agenda and initiatives.
India and Peru engaged actively in coordinating their
renewable energy cooperation agenda since the fi rst meeting
of the bilateral Joint Commission. Talks for the establishment
of a specifi c international agreement on this important topic
led to the signature of the Agreement on Cooperation in New
and Renewable Energy, signed during the offi cial visit of Vice
President of India, Shri Venkaiah Naidu, to Peru in May 2018.
The Agreement on New and Renewable Energies
identifi es and establishes cooperation activities between the
Ministry of Energy and Mining of Peru and the Ministry of
New and Renewable Energy of India. The broad scope of
the agreement includes exchange and training of scientists;
sharing of data and information; technology transfers;
organisation of workshops and seminars, as well as other
forms of cooperation agreed by both countries.
On the other hand, ISA is an international organisation
based in India, which aims to deploy more than 1,000
Gigawatts of solar energy and mobilize more than USD 1
billion for investment in solar energy by 2030. In its short run
as a fully-fl edged international organisation, ISA has worked
to facilitate and accelerate the deployment of solar energy in
developing countries for them to meet the growing demand
for energy and help combat climate change in the spirit of
the Paris Agreement of 2015.
Peru is a founding member of the International Solar
Alliance and has a key interest to participate in its agenda and
initiatives. This interest is refl ected in the active participation
of the Minister of Energy and Mines of Peru, H.E. Francisco
Ísmodes, in ISA events since its start of operations in 2018.
Minister Ísmodes attended the ISA Forum held on the
sidelines of Intersolar Europe 2018 at Munich, Germany, in
June 2018, as well as the First Assembly of the International
Solar Alliance and RE-INVEST 2018 last October.
It was during this latter meeting that Minister Ísmodes
was elected Vice President of ISA for Latin America and the
Caribbean. In this position Peru will actively seek to engage
more countries of the region in ISA initiatives, thus helping
ISA to achieve its core objective of expanding the use of
renewables at a global scale.
Shaping itself as a leader in solar and renewable energy,
Peru announced at the ISA Assembly its hosting of the
ISA-Peru-LAC Renewable Energy Meet and Expo (SUN
WORLD 2019) in November next year. SUN WORLD 2019
will be a major international event that shall gather not only
members of government, but also enterprises, opinion leaders
and scientists to discuss ways to imprint a Latin American
perspective to the ISA agenda and, more widely, how to
further new and innovative ISA initiatives.
With Peru’s potential in resources and increasing role as
regional leader in this area, renewable energies emerge as a
new frontier for Peruvian Foreign Policy, beyond which lie
a realm of completely new possibilities. The engagement
between Peru, India and the International Solar Alliance in
developing new energies should only bring about greater
wellbeing for our peoples through access to better, cheaper
and more sustainable sources of energy.
