ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL T he Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) adopted Agenda 2063 at the 24th Ordinary Assembly held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 30th to 31st January, 2015. What is it? It is a strategic framework for the socio- economic transformation of the continent over the next 50 years. It builds on and seeks to accelerate the implementat ion of past and existing continental initiatives for growth and sustainable development. Some of the past and current initiatives it builds on include – the Lagos Plan of Action, the Abuja Treaty, the Minimum Integration Programme, the Programme for Infrastructural Development in Africa (PIDA), the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP), the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), and Regional Plans and Programmes and National Plans. It also incorporates national, regional and continental best practices in its formulation. The Guiding Vision The guiding vision for Agenda 2063 is the AU Vision to “build an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, an Africa driven and managed by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the international arena.” The Foundations The following form the Foundations for Agenda 2063: • The Constitutive Act of the African Union • The African Union Vision • The 8 Priorities of the OAU/AU 50th Anniversary Solemn Declaration • African Aspirations for 2063 • Regional and Continental Frameworks • Member States National Plans The African Aspirations for 2063 The seven African Aspirations were derived through a consultative process with the African Citizenry. These are: • A Prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development; • An Integrated Continent, Politically United, based on the ideals of Pan Africanism and the vision of Africa’s Renaissance; • An Africa of Good Governance, Respect for Human Rights, Justice and the Rule of Law; • A Peaceful and Secure Africa; • An Africa with a strong Cultural Identity, Values and Ethics; • An Africa whose development is people driven, especially relying on the potential offered by its women and youth; and The guiding vision for Agenda 2063 is the AU Vision to “build an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, an Africa driven and managed by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the international arena.” 2018 • Africa Day Special • 17
