The last twelve months have been unpredictable, in The Bahamas and in the world. From political sideshows to celebrities kicking the bucket, 2016 brought the drama. It was like The Hunger Games, from start to end. We’re still waiting for answers to year-long questions. Where’s the Value Added Tax (VAT) money? What’s up with Toggie and Bobo? Who’s running in which constituencies in 2017? What is the “homosexual agenda” the religious leaders know so much about? Anyone know?
The June 2016 gender equality referendum was a disaster from the break, but it wasn’t just us. The United Kingdom voted for Brexit, Colombia voted against the peace deal, and Trump really became the U.S. president elect. Maybe the whole world is going to hell in a straw purse.

We watched as leadership of the Free National Movement (FNM) was contested, and the drama that unfolded throughout the year. We thought we’d seen it all, but we weren’t ready. Seven FNM MPs kicked Dr. Hubert Minnis to the curb, voting for current Opposition Leader Loretta Butler-Turner to replace him. We’re still waiting for the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) convention to see how the leadership battle between Prime Minister Perry Christie and Alfred Sears goes.
At the beginning of November, only 57,000 people had registered to vote — less than half the number of registered voters at the same point ahead of the 2012 general election. They’ve been begging us to vote for months, but turn women away for “improper” attire. Does that make any sense? Let’s not pretend like some of us didn’t lose all of our “good clothes” in Hurricane Matthew. They’re lucky we kept our passports dry, right?
