Making In is a nonprofit organization conceived of and started by Joseph Walsh, an Irish designer and maker whose studio is in Fartha, Riverstick, County Cork, Ireland. Making In, an annual two-day seminar that takes place on the grounds of his studio, was started in 2017 as an event called “Decoding Craftsmanship.” Building off that intention and design, Making In brings together international creatives from the disciplines of art, craft, design and architecture for conversation and debate. Moderated by Glen Adamson, Making In examines making as a “way of thinking, exploring, expressing and imagining.” Aside from the conference itself, Joseph Walsh and his studio create videos and documentaries to highlight various makers.

Joseph Walsh

Joseph Walsh was born in County Cork, Ireland, where he established his studio in 1999 and continues to operate his practice. Walsh is a master woodworker, but he learned his craft not through formal training. Instead, he was first self-taught and then he made a point of visiting master makers around Europe and Japan. This allowed him to innovate through new methods and forms, oftentimes incorporating the inspiration from other crafts.
