Mozambique, for example, over one million children in Grades 1 to 3 continued learning through play with televised lessons.
The pandemic did stoke conversations about ways certain forms of technology could allow us to put the power of play into the hands of more learners and educators. One outcome was the creation of our POWER video series – a collection of 100 Right To Play games that help caregivers build children's psychosocial well-being and holistic skills. The animated series open-sourced access to these games for the first time, and they’re now available in English, French, and Arabic for teachers, parents, and caregivers around the world.
How is Right To Play thinking of digital education programming now?
Let me mention one project about which I am very excited.
In Rwanda, we’ve launched a new certification program on play-based learning for teachers. The course is hybrid and asynchronous, which
gives busy teachers the flexibility and the
support they need to complete the course.
I'm also excited about our Plug in Play project, which is also being offered in Rwanda. It was created in response to the national government’s ambition to move towards a knowledge-based economy. Through the project, students are getting the chance to explore and develop STEM skills in the classroom. Many children have started thinking about careers in science, research, and technology as a result.
There’s lots to think about when it comes to the role of digital technology in education. I was just reading a recent UNESCO article that revealed how the digital shift in education deepened inequality and learning loss. They project that in lower-income countries, the cost of connecting all schools to the internet and fully embracing digital learning would add 50 percent to their financing gap for achieving national education targets. They also found that in some cases, children who were learning online during the pandemic engaged less,
Each year, millions of children in Africa, Asia, Canada, and the Middle East are harmed by disease, displacement, poverty and war. Right To Play harnesses the power of play to transform their lives.
