publisher or editor engages with specific authors or subjects. It is certainly true with this issue.
For example, since our last issue, the world watched the horrific terrorist attack on Israel and the devastation brought forth by Israel’s unrestrained response which not only opened old wounds but reconstituted alliances across the globe. Then, individuals in America watched as presidents of highly regarded universities could not articulate to members of Congress the difference between free speech and harmful or destructive acts of protest, which only played into the hands of members who saw an opportunity to push against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives for political gain. And then, generative artificial intelligence (AI) broke through tech speak and specialty to enter our contemporary lexicon and zeitgeist, prompting resignations and board firings as sides were taken by experts as to whether AI was a good or bad idea.
We could go on. But just these few instances cause us to ask: if we cannot get along after centuries of living together, cannot provide clarity after centuries of conversing with one another, or come to consensus about things after engaging centuries of reason and science, then what is the purpose of education and what constitutes higher learning?
Fortunately, people and organizations profiled in this issue – all accomplished creators, educators, and thinkers – provide through their practice and actions insight into issues and problems confronting the way we teach and learn. Moreover, their life practice of making and/or advising has built a deep working knowledge of and experience with various histories and cultures through which emerge means to best respond individually and collectively to the world coming at us.
Learning from their practice and building upon the means recommended, we may not only be better able to address contemporary issues but reform our educational practices to promote human dignity and living a dignified human existence.
Enjoy!
