According to a Pew Research Center report, Americans would welcome a change to the way higher education is administered. A survey conducted by the center found “about six-in-ten Americans (61 percent) say the higher education system in the United States is going in the wrong direction – though Republicans and Democrats differ over why they think it is the case.”

Moving away from strictly ideological positions, among Americans who say the country’s higher education system is going in the wrong direction, 84 percent cite high tuition costs as a major reason why they think this is the case. Another 65 percent say students are not getting the skills they need in the workplace; 54 percent believe colleges and universities are too concerned about protecting students from views they might find offensive; and 50 percent believe professors bring their political and social views into the classroom.1
