The theory underpinning a universally accepted economic development model to create intergenerational wealth states that if you give a woman a chance to earn an income, she’ll use what she earns for her children and family first.
Susan Matteucci, founder of Southwest Creations Collaborative, understood this theory early on in her career, but it took some time to create the organization that would make such possible.
While working for the Women’s Self-Employment Project in Chicago, Susan organized the Full Circle Fund, a microlending initiative launched in partnership with Muhammed Yunus of the Grameen Bank. This valuable initial work helped her realize that while women participating in the Fund gained a powerful sense of community, very few became successful entrepreneurs and most who participated were unable to generate sufficient income because they lacked adequate access to markets.
The Mission of Southwest Creations Collaborative is building educational and economic opportunities across generations for women from low-income communities.
