address the breakthroughs and ethical applications of AI. University of California, San Diego, Boston University, and the University of Chicago have also initiated progress toward their own AI and data science centers. Given the disproportionate allocation of financial resources at these institutional types, it is reasonable to be concerned about the impact upon small and private institutions’ future enrollments as potential students may be increasingly pulled to colleges and universities who have the infrastructure to offer AI tools and learning as a differentiator in the college experience.

Conclusion

The emergence of AI and its transformational potential upon access, teaching, learning, equity, and employment for college students should conjure visions of how colleges and universities can continue to enhance the democratic purposes of higher education. While AI has sparked concerns about the negative possibilities for the future, there is more historical and current evidence that cites the significant potential for this technology to

enhance, rather than diminish, the human

elements of the college and university experience. Changes and institutional priorities will need to evolve at all institutions, but AI's role in fostering collaboration, increasing human efficiency, and supporting individual student needs signifies its potential to enhance the value of higher education.

Ultimately, the future of AI is like all technologies that have come before it. Unlocking its true potential will depend on our elimination of unfounded fears, balancing optimism with caution, ensuring ethical considerations are always at the forefront of AI decision-making, and fostering collaboration amongst a shared learning community to intentionally grow connections with one another across all disciplines. By embracing AI as a tool to enhance all our human capabilities and focusing on thoughtful integration instead of human replacement, colleges and universities should exchange skepticism and fear with optimism and hope. Because despite AI’s transformational raw potential, the presence of our united humanity is the fuel for any disruptive technology to thrive.
