Commercial Projects
Malone is also involved with commercial projects. Consider, for example, the television series, "The Great Pottery Throwdown," and the architectural facade for 24 Savile Row.
The Great Pottery Throwdown
The Great Pottery Throwdown is a British television competition, first aired in 2015. Amateur potters compete to complete pottery challenges. Malone served as an expert
judge on the program during the first two
seasons, increasing public engagement with pottery and ceramics and bringing her personage and skills to a greater audience.
24 Savile Row
24 Savile Row was a collaboration between EPR Architects and Kate Malone. The building is located on London’s Savile Row, which is world famous for its tailors and tailoring heritage. For
the project, Malone created 10,000 hand-glazed ceramic tiles whose crystalline glazes are three-dimensional and come in four
varying textures: three white and one black with
blue crystals. The tiles are positioned on the exterior of the building above a decorative sand-cast bronze plinth.
It was quite a project, involving a great deal of research and testing, as the accompanying video attests. As stated in the video, Kate wonders whether – had they known of the difficulties to be faced – they would have begun the project. But the result is spectacular, as the tiles change color as wind and weather pass over them during the day. The dynamic interface has resulted in the building being considered a work of art, and one which Malone finds aligns with her work as a potter – insofar as the building would resemble a pot holing people instead of liquid.
Returning to Themes within Kate’s Career
Continuing with lunch (the soup and smoked trout, by the way, are fantastic!), our conversation segues again into dignity, craft, and art.
Kate, again, generously asks what we think. But as we point out, that is not our job: we are here
to ask questions and learn. Malone smiles, and
