We knew immediately that it would be an
interesting and fun day, as Kate Malone emerged
from her car at the train station’s car park, wearing
a blue coat over her printed flower bib overalls and
white tennis shoes, her red hair framing a big smile
and stylish burnt orange sunglasses. And as we
moved from a car tour of the general area where
she and her husband Graham had recently
purchased a country home, we were soon to be
fully engaged in conversation over a lunch of spinach soup, smoked trout, and fresh bread – taking only a short break to tour the house, the grounds, and her studio while constantly throwing a ball for her two-year old Jack Russell in a game of fetch.
During our tour she asked whether we had ever before visited the area, told us about the lively history that included landings by Ceasar and illicit trading, and inquired as to whether we were hungry. But as the ones who were there to do an interview, it was Kate’s statement when sitting down to lunch that brought the most pleasant surprise.
