GUYANA | 2,238,000 ACRES TO PROTECT
Save 2.2 Million Acres of Pristine Amazon Forest From Mining
Jaguars, Giant Anteaters, and Giant Otters are among the many threatened species that roam the ancient wilderness of South America’ s Guiana Shield, where more than 90 % of the forest remains intact, making it one of Earth’ s largest remaining stands of primary tropical forest. Here, hidden deep in the undisturbed forest of southern Guyana, we find the Wapichan headwaters. This network of freshwater sources feeds into some of Guyana’ s largest rivers before joining the Amazon and Essequibo river basins.
The southward spread of gold mining threatens this vast, untouched wilderness. To prevent forest loss, Rainforest Trust and our Indigenous-led partner, South Rupununi District Council / South Central Peoples Development Association, will safeguard 2,238,000 acres of highly intact rainforest to create the new Wapichan Headwater Conserved Area. This project will join a vast mosaic of protected areas in the region, linking the 1.5-million-acre Kanuku Mountains Protected Area to the north and the 1.6-million-acre Konashen Community-owned Conserved Area to the south, and protecting essential habitat for Giant Anteaters and other threatened species.
