The countries within Latin America and the Caribbean support an astounding and irreplaceable diversity and abundance of life, including the most diverse of the world’ s biodiversity hotspots, and the largest and most important of tropical rainforests on the planet.
Beyond its wildlife and plant cover, the region supports hundreds of local and Indigenous communities, safeguards more than 150 gigatonnes of CO2 equivalents, and helps regulate the climate for the entire planet.

The fires that burned across South America last year are proof enough that these vital natural places are also at great risk. Bulldozers and chainsaws cut away at forests. Mining, agriculture, and other destructive practices degrade and pollute habitats. Climate change increases the risk and severity of drought and wildfire.
