Kusho – Fraction of a second sculptures
One of Shinichi Maruyama’s most famous series is called Kusho (the Japanese word for writing in the sky). The vision of this Japanese photographer goes beyond reality to the field invisible to the naked eye. The Kusho series consists of twenty-three large-scale colour photographs. Two liquids colliding the millisecond before they merge into grey creates fascinating forms and shapes that consist of both strength (of the movement) and fragility (of the material). The splitsecond timing necessary to photograph these pictures – 7,500th of a second, or even 20,000th of a second – is made possible by recent advances in strobe light technology, which Maruyama uses extensively in his commercial work too.
