Our 1st Year Going Paperless

Gone are the messy 3 ring binders, shelves of dog-eared books, and thousands of black and white printouts. We've drastically changed things for the better in the digital photo class in 2015-16. Although it was a bit bumpy at first, we are learning all the time and really seeing payoffs.

We are lucky to have a dedicated computer lab with a virtual server at Pine Tree High for our photography students. In the digital photo class, all students have their own desktop computer, as well as their own Ipad. Students share from 15 digital cameras of various size and ability.

Students learn not only how to capture a beautiful image in good lighting, focus and composition but also how to edit that photo using software such as Photoshop and a myriad of Apps including BeFunky, Pixlr, and Snapseed (just to name a few.) Students create their own website to have a permanent portfolio of their work.

The class is "flipped." I give a short introduction to the assignment and spell out expectations. leaving the students to hands-on problem solving the majority of the time. Students have access to examples, and video tutorials, and rubrics on their Google Classroom (online classroom.) The class is paperless. Most of the time, students are actively shooting photos or manipulating them on the computer. I am mainly a facilitator, motivating them to improve and troubleshooting when they have problems.

Students are able to access their work 24-7. If they miss a class, no problem. The daily assignment is posted online. As long as they have an internet connection, students just log in to get all their assignments and access all their past work.
