Harbor Day School in Corona del Mar celebrated its new buildings with a grand opening in November .
DAY IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Years in the making , Harbor Day School in Corona del Mar celebrated the grand opening of the final phase of its new buildings . The Nov . 12 event capped off 3 ½ years of campus construction for the private K-8 school , which was established in 1952 . Phase 1 of the project started in 2019 when the city Planning Commission approved building plans , giving a green light for the school ’ s first major construction since 2000 when Blass Gymnasium was built . Construction of a nearly 66,000-square-foot main structure , completed in 2021 , featured state-of-the-art classrooms , outdoor learning spaces and a cutting-edge STEAM ( science , technology , engineering , arts and mathematics ) wing . The newly finished second phase includes a theater , music classrooms , a modern kitchen , playground , gymnasium , athletic field and courts , bringing the campus to almost 100,000 square feet — approximately 50 % larger than the school ’ s previous buildings . Harbor Day School partnered with design firm LPA Inc ., general contractor DPR Construction and Farmers & Merchants Bank for the project . Funding came from donations received in a capital campaign as well as from the school ’ s endowment and Farmers & Merchants Bank . ( 949-640-1410 ; harborday . org ) — Sharon Stello
BEEK GIVES BACK
Local footwear brand beek hosted a community food drive in December for nonprofit Project Hope Alliance . In addition to collecting food , the event , held in the St . Andrews Presbyterian Church parking lot , helped raise awareness about local children — many in the Newport- Mesa Unified School District — who don ’ t have enough to eat and live in an unstable housing situation . The event was a twist on Trunk or Treat , having students fill bags with food ( for others rather than candy for themselves ) by going trunk to trunk to collect various types of donated staples and snack items . Families were invited to purchase

This was beek ’ s seventh year hosting a kids-for-kids give-back initiative to help end childhood hunger in Orange County . Additionally , since beek ’ s first year in business in 2014 , the company has donated the equivalent of more than 643,000 meals to children in need through a partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County .
