EDITOR ’ S LETTER
Reading through the stories for this issue ’ s Eat & Drink special section left me dreaming about the delightful dishes that chefs continue to whip up in Newport Beach . Each mouthwatering detail made me want to try their culinary creations . We hope this issue also leaves you with a hunger to venture out and taste these crave-worthy menu items .
First , we showcase the talents and imagination of local mixologists who expertly craft cocktails while sharing stories and lending an ear to anyone who sidles up to their bar . Learn more about these leaders of the libation world on page 44 .
Next , we highlight bowls of all types , filled with everything from acai and fresh fruit to more savory options like poke or other healthy mixes like turkey , veggies and quinoa or rice and veggie bowls drizzled with Asian sesame or coconut-lemongrass dressings . These light and tasty bowls are perfect for eating on the go ( page 54 ).
And , lastly , we explore dishes and drinks that pack a punch : from spicy margaritas at multiple locations to avocado pizza with jalapeno ricotta at Skal Pizza and a yellowtail jalapeno dish at Nobu Newport Beach . Read “ Turn up the Heat ” on page 62 for more .
Elsewhere in this edition , “ Reduce , Reuse , Resell ” looks at the many consignment and thrift stores that keep styles in circulation and reduce the amount of clothing , shoes , purses , housewares and more that end up in the landfill ( page 34 ).
And , in “ Heaven Sent ,” we feature the Southern California Hospice Foundation ’ s Heavenly Home , a place for low-cost , end-of-life care for those with terminal illnesses ( page 38 ). The foundation ’ s director , a Newport resident , and her staff are dedicated to making the residents ’ final days as joyful as possible . The home , open for a little over a year now , is the first of its kind in the county and a model for others hoping to start their own hospice home . It was an honor to visit the home and learn about past and present residents ’ stories as well as the nonprofit ’ s mission . The organization is now fundraising to grow its endowment , a worthy cause for any philanthropic-minded locals .
We hope this issue of Newport Beach Magazine inspires our readers and encourages you to get more involved in the community , whether that ’ s supporting local restaurants by going out to try a new dish or volunteering with nonprofits to bolster their cause .
