Marseille Match fixing
Near the end of the 1993 season Marseille needed to beat Valenciennes to claim its fifth-straight French title just days before its European Cup final against AC Milan. Marseille strolled to a 1-0 win, which meant it would not need to beat title-rivals in their final game to lift the trophy. The club ended up being found guilty of bribing the Valenciennes players to lose the match. Marseille were stripped of the French title and relegated, while individuals at the club served jail terms and football bans of up to two years.
The Murder of Andres Escobar
Colombian defender Andres Escobar was murdered in July 1994 just after the team was eliminated from the World Cup due to his own goal, and it is widely believed that it was why he was killed.
It is thought it could have been drug traffickers who lost money betting on the team that they targeted the defender. If you have watched the goal you would realize it is quite clearly an unfortunate error which could happen at times even to the best defenders of the game, and it is a tragedy that he was murdered.
