Near the end of the 1993 season Marseille needed to beat Valenciennes to claim its fifth-straight French title just days before its European Cup final against AC Milan . Marseille strolled to a 1-0 win , which meant it would not need to beat title-rivals in their final game to lift the trophy . The club ended up being found guilty of bribing the Valenciennes players to lose the match . Marseille were stripped of the French title and relegated , while individuals at the club served jail terms and football bans of up to two years .
The Murder of Andres Escobar
Colombian defender Andres Escobar was murdered in July 1994 just after the team was eliminated from the World Cup due to his own goal , and it is widely believed that it was why he was killed .
It is thought it could have been drug traffickers who lost money betting on the team that they targeted the defender . If you have watched the goal you would realize it is quite clearly an unfortunate error which could happen at times even to the best defenders of the game , and it is a tragedy that he was murdered .
