2nd Minority Primary School of Komotini / Greece
The 2 nd (Muslim) Minority Primary School of Komotini is situated near the centre of the city at
Filippoupoleos street next to the Mosque. It was established around 100 years ago.
In our school there are 7 classrooms, 1 administrative room, 1 library and 1teacher’s room. In this
school year, our school has 14 teachers, 1headmaster, 1 deputy director and 127 students. In our school
these languages are taught: Turkish, Greek and English. Beside lessons, the students and teachers take
part in cultural, sport activities as well as in international projects.
Since 2012 we seed traditional plant varieties in our school. We collaborate together with other
teachers in a network of local schools which counts 16 years. Every year around February all the
students together with the teachers seed tomatoes, peppers and eggplants in the schoolyard. We nourish
them and when they have grown we share a part of them in a community festival with growers. The rest
of the plants of traditional varieties are shared between the students. They learn how to grow their own
food and at the same time preserve and spread seeds of traditional plant varieties.
This year we have also participated in the “Eratosthenes Experiment” in which we calculated the
circumference of the Earth by using eLearning educational tools and simple instruments. Finally we
trained like an Astronaut by participating in Mission X.
