A Note for the Support Person
It is not always easy to know how to best support a woman in labor . Everyone is different , every labor is different , and her needs may change quickly , even from one contraction to the next .
If she seems to be doing well , it may be best to simply encourage her to keep doing what she is doing . However , if you need ideas for something different , this guide can help .
When contractions get very strong , she will need to focus . She may find touch , massage and / or talking to be distracting , especially during a contraction . Keep the room calm and peaceful .
You may need to try different ideas to find what works . If you discover something that is helpful , keep doing it . She will let you know if it stops helping at some point . Do not take offense if she speaks sharply . She is working hard and may not be able to communicate her needs easily .
At all times , stay calm , encouraging and flexible . Be attentive , be yourself and do your best . Sometimes , knowing you are there is all she needs .
