Upskill for the new age

The world has changed , and the world of events has changed along with it . Events have transitioned from being the oldest of all marketing forms into the newest and most disruptive . We are now technological pioneers , moving towards new frontiers , blending the digital and physical event experience , creating digital communities , developing new revenue streams , enhancing existing propositions and benefiting from increased customer analytics and touchpoints .

As brands now look to deliver exceptional omnichannel experiences for their customers , new skillsets and technologies are needed to achieve this . The Virtual Events Institute ( VEI ) is bringing the industry together to educate , inspire , innovate and showcase new technologies .
Virtual and physical events are complementary , not exclusive . Digital offers the opportunity to amplify the results and success of global events . Our aim as the Virtual Events Institute is to help event professionals adapt quickly to the challenges of today while preparing for the opportunities of the future .
Sophie Ahmed , CEO and co-founder , Virtual Events Institute

During 2020 I went from having 30 years ’ experience in conceiving , creating and producing events to having approximately 30 weeks ’ experience in conceiving , creating and producing virtual events . It has been a rollercoaster ride for event professionals of every type . Those of us who have previously embraced and championed technology , in all its forms , have found the transition easier but it has been the definition of a “ learning curve ” for us all .

We have seen huge opportunities appear and the pace of change towards an inevitable hybrid future accelerate beyond measure . The future is with us earlier than expected .
It is a future we can ’ t hide from . We must adapt ; face the challenges and own the moment . This isn ’ t about unlearning old skills and expertise , it ’ s about re-skilling and changing mindsets . As event professionals our knowledge , networks and instincts remain powerful , we must relearn how , where and when to apply them in this new , fully digital , technological world .
The world has changed , and it has changed forever . We are being offered new markets , new formats , new ways of approaching old challenges . The genie will not go back in the bottle . What will your three wishes be ? Make sure you use them wisely .
Simon Burton , director and co-founder , Virtual Events Institute
