C HAPTER 2. I NFINITY IN A QUINAS AND B ONAVENTURE . In the Commentary on the Sentences, Bonaventure discusses six arguments supporting a temporal beginning of the universe. The first five arguments consider the paradoxical nature of infinity; the sixth argument is centered on the notion of creation which was discussed in the previous chapter. We will use Bonaventure’s five arguments from infinity to give the structure of the present chapter. The five arguments are as follows: (1) It is impossible for an infinite to be added to. (2) It is impossible for an infinite to be ordered. (3) It is impossible for an infinite to be traversed. (4) It is impossible for an infinite number of things to be comprehended by a finite power. (5) It is impossible for an infinite number of things to exist simultaneously. Page 24 of 62
