By the thirteenth century the heretical
sects were for the most part expunged from the
area, largely due to the exacting pressure of the
trials of the Inquisition, the exhaustion of war, education of the laity and the priesthood in
Catholic theology, as well as the implementation of the reforms in the Church as called for by the
Fourth Lateran Council. 101
