Edinburgh, being the capital city of Scotland is bound to have a wealth of offerings for any fan of music, and what it offers does not disappoint. No matter what genre of music you are into you will certainly find something here to please your music taste buds, whether that be a new upcoming indie band or a world famous dubstep artist, Edinburgh has it all! First off the capital city has many clubs, large and small and each venue regularly hosts live music nights with artists performing to crowds ranging from a small quiet gathering to a heaving mass of avid fans. With a variety of clubs to choose from, with each having established its “crowd” over several years of service most people will be satisfied with what’s on offer.

The underground scene is a bustling part of the night life in Edinburgh, and it is safe to say it is here to stay. The Bongo Club; belonging to the University of Edinburgh is once such place that has held host to a variety of well known underground artists such as Flux Pavilion, Basement Jaxx and Camo & Crooked and is home to the “wee dub festival” which is a 3 day festival held every February in several clubs around the city showing how music events don’t need to be the of the mainstream nature to attract attention, and to be successful. The Caves, also hosts part of this festival, and while the club does not hold too many public events, many upcoming bands, and older bands play here, gaining support and helping new bands especially find their feet in the industry.

For those looking to enjoy some more alternative music, clubs such as Opium and Studio 24 will surely satisfy any listener of smaller, less known music genres. Opium is a well established nightclub that caters for all rock music needs, open seven nights a week this fantastic and diverse club offers themed nights playing classic rock to metal, punk, emo and modern rock, for anyone interested in music of this sort then Opium is somewhere that needs to be explored. Studio 24 caters for an even smaller selection of individuals who’s taste in music is specific to say the least, hidden away at the east end of the city centre Studio 24 not only showcases live music but is also home to a diverse collection of club nights aimed to cater for every alternative genre from Balkan beats to psy-trance and dubstep. This venue is especially keen on showcasing local talent.

For those with a more mainstream taste Edinburgh does not falter, with big clubs and venues ranging from the long-standing “Cav” (lava ignite), to the HMV picture house and Potterrow showcasing standard nightclub nights playing music for a general audience with chart hits, electro, dance, cheese and indie genres making the list of most played. Venues such as these also host larger named artists in the music industry from time to time. Showing that Edinburgh does indeed have something for everyone.
