This is one of our student curators (March 2016) beside her grandmother (December 1945) who was also a UBC student. One of these students said this: “Everyone wears sweaters and some comfortable pants as they’re usually biking or running to get to class. I usually have my hair in a ponytail and wear my Kappa Kappa Gamma key necklace.” Does this sound like the campus fashion of 1945 or 2016? Photographs Courtesy of Jordan Fish WHY THUNDERBIRDS? Thunderbirds was chosen by the staff of the Ubyssey newspaper and the Pep Club following two polls of the student body in 1934. In 1948, in an effort to make UBC a more welcoming and inclusive space for First Nations students, Kwakwaka’wakw Chief William _ _ Scow and the Neel family gifted their Thunderbird and the Victory Through Honour Pole to the Alma Mater Society. Since 1934, both UBC sports teams and students have worn clothing with different representations of the Thunderbird. 4
