Built in 1830 and accented with 28 columns , Greenwood is considered the South ’ s finest example of Greek revival architecture . Though the original house burned down in 1960 , the columns and front steps remained . It was rebuilt and now stands as it did over a century ago , amidst rows of majestic , moss-draped Oaks . Explore the beautiful 1830 original Barrow family furnishings , as well as pieces from the many movies filmed on location .
Audubon Historic Site Exploration
Audubon Historic Site is located on Oakley Plantation , where John James Audubon lived in 1821 . During this time , he was commissioned to teach illustration to the daughter of Mr . and Mrs . James Pirrie , owners of Oakley . Although his engagement was brief and there is no record of his success in teaching Miss Pirrie , Audubon worked on several of his paintings while in the lush , natural , and peaceful setting of Oakley , filling his sketch pad with notes and drawings for his famous series of bird illustrations . The variety of birds singing throughout the 100-acre forest inspires visitors to this day .
