Female boxing has gained in popularity in the UK
exponentially since Nicola Adams took the gold medal at
London 2012.
To step into the ring for the average man is a frightening
thought so for a young lady, with the modern day
pressures of beauty and perfection constantly being
thrusted in our faces by the media and society it is
especially brilliant and I applaud them.
Most of us have watched a Boxing match on TV but very
few will have been up close. Instead of twelve 3 minute
rounds where a lot of eyeing up and teasing takes place,
amateur boxing has notably fewer rounds (here 2-4) with
each lasting just 2 minutes. This may not sound long but
I challenge you to hit a punch bag for just a minute that
does not hit back.
There is a distinct absence of “dancing” in the ring lost to
a sheer flurry of punches, jabs and upper cuts delivered
hard and fast from the outset. There is no let up. This is
full on action that if a guard is let down for 1 second will
be punished severely.
