Kids love to play in the woods - the freedom and
potential exploration it presents allows kids to be what
they are. It takes them back to nature, the wilderness,
a time before social media, games consoles and
infinite TV channels. A time when family walks would
be enjoyed after Sunday lunch to avoid the dreaded
food coma induced by over consumption.
It is for this very reason that Cyclocross is so family
friendly. Mum or dad can race whilst the family is kept
occupied. So much more engaging and interesting
than standing by the roadside waiting patiently for
a fleeting glimpse of a loved one. Generally a timed
event with multiple laps it provides constant action and
if you find the right spot a plethora of thrills and falls.
At PORC (Penshurst Off Road Club) it has become
customary to light a fire not only for warmth should it
be exceptionally cold but as an attraction. Bonfires are
almost extinct in the South East of England now bar
country houses. Seen as environmentally unfriendly
and anti social (neighbours may have their washing
out) the great art of building them has passed the
current generation.
So for them to be actively allowed to get involved with
parental supervision is to be applauded. It provides
an opportunity to see the various dynamics of a fire,
how different woods burn and what happens if you put
green vegetation onto it. They feel the heat, the power,
how wind can ignite a flame of fury and burn for hours.
It spells out the dangers associated with playing with
fire and so is educational.
