THE FIGHT
AGAINST CANCER
According to a World Health Organization report,
premature deaths by non-communicable diseases are
one of the highest in India. Of all the other noncommunicable diseases like cardiovascular ailments,
chronic respiratory problems and diabetes, CANCER is a
major public health concern.
The cancer burden in developing countries is reaching
pandemic proportions. Cancer is one of the leading
causes of death in India, with about 2.5 million cancer
patients, 1 million new cases added every year and with
a chance of the disease rising five-fold by 2025. Indian
Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has urged the
Government of India to make cancer a notifiable
disease. There is a high probability of treating cancers if
detected early.
World Cancer Day, annual observance held on February
4 that is intended to increase global awareness of
CANCER. Celebration of World Cancer Day signifies the
effort by United Nations (UN), World Health
Organisations (WHO), government and other major
health organisations to unite the world and devise
strategies in the fight against the cancer and also
disseminate the facts about the epidemic disease,
treatments and preventive measures among public.
The objective of World Cancer Day is to save millions of
cancer victims and educate the public about the cancer
symptoms, preventive measures and risk of the
epidemic disease. Raising awareness about healthy
diet, physical activity and environmental carcinogens is
also a major part of the World Cancer Day event. Cancer
awareness has become exceedingly important in the
21st century. While there have been numerous
advancements in the understanding, diagnosis, and
treatment of cancer—factors that should contribute to
the decline of the disease—the number of new cancer
cases diagnosed each year has globally continued to
increase. According to the World Health Organization
(WHO), if the incidence of cancer continues to grow
Director Speak
at the reported rate, the number of deaths
worldwide from cancer will increase to more than
13.1 million by 2030. As a result, raising awareness of
cancer prevention has become a prominent goal of
many cancer and health organizations around the
world, and World Cancer Day has come to represent
an annual reaffirmation of the importance of this
goal.
Because more than 70 percent of deaths from cancer
occur in economically less-developed countries,
World Cancer Day and the World Cancer Campaign
have become important mechanisms for drawing
attention to cancer prevention and treatment in
these countries. For example, in Nicaragua, where
access to cancer treatment centres was severely
limited, World Cancer Day 2007 marked the
beginning of an international collaboration designed
to improve cancer-care resources within the country.
