Be Water Wise This Summer

Victoria residents use more water in July, August and September than they do during the remaining nine months of the year. During
July-September, residents use 133 million gallons of water compared with 125 million gallons used during the other nine months of the

year.

Water is essential to our everyday lives. Whether it comes from your own well or from a public water supply, water down the drain is
money down the drain. Try the following water-saving tips.
• Water lawns once or twice each week.
• Check sprinkler systems for leaks, overspray and broken sprinkler heads and make repairs immediately.
• Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks.
• Use a rain barrel to collect rain water and use it to water plants.
• Install a smart sprinkler controller, which adjusts watering
based on weather, soil type, amount of shade and plant type.
• Water plants in the early morning or late evening to reduce
evaporation and ineff ective watering due to wind.
• Consider letting your lawn go dormant rather than watering
during the summer months. If you do water, 1-1.5 in. per week
total, including rainfall, should be suffi cient. An in. of water
on a 7,000 sq. ft . lawn equals more than 4,000 gallons of water.
