25 year old Jimmy October calls his sound “ New Calypso,” he says, It’s re- ally something that happened naturally. I got to a point where I wanted to make different music than I was already mak- ing. The first song that really had me thinking I was creating something new was “Vacation” and at that point was when I was like I know what I’m gonna call this. It’s Whats your process of creating music ? I always get asked this question but I feel like every song is different. One thing for sure is I listen to beats continuously before writing to it. Sometimes days, sometimes weeks. Just listening to figure out how I want to approach starting to write the song. Sometimes I write the chorus first and then other times I start with a verse. It’s all about the vibe and where my mind goes at the time. Jimmy October performing for Lost Tribe band What inspires you and your hope for the future ? New Wave Rehearsal 2 2 This might sound cliche but I think my main source of inspiration has been life. Not just my life but life itself is super inspirational. There’s so much happen- ing all around. I go to art ex- hibitions as much as I can because being able to view other people art and process what it took to create that feels really crazy to me. The fact that someone can create a piece that’s not directly related to music or songwriting or anything but It can make me feel 3 3 inspired to write some- thing that’s also not di- rectly related to a painting or a drawing. I don’t know if that makes sense to you but that’s just something that i’ve always found in- teresting. Written by Olajuwon Scott All Photos by :Olajuwon Scott
