and seeing them get excited about the concept . There are a lot of Shakespeare fans and our book series has allowed them to find fellow Bardolaters and people to geek out about Shakespeare with . That ’ s really special .
In terms of audience , who is this book for ? If you know and enjoy Shakespeare , this book is for you . If you don ’ t like Shakespeare , then I still think this book is for you . If you ’ ve heard of Romeo and Juliet , this book is for you . If you like Westerns , or kick-ass characters , or love triangles , or “ rally the gang ” stories , or magic … this book is for you .
So … everyone ?
tween Juliet and Romeo came to my mind . And within a few minutes the story came to me – the Western storyline , Juliet ’ s pregnancy , the love triangle and voila ! My “ Magnificent Shakespeare Seven ” concept was born !
What kind of obstacles did you face while putting this title together ? As mentioned above , the first obstacle was getting the publishing rights to Kill Shakespeare back . That took a while to make happen – and included some technical problems along the way ( not enough space in this forum to share that …).
Normally the other problems are finding the right publishing partner and the right artist . But those were both very smooth ( hello , Gemstone ! What ’ s up , Stefan ?). So I ’ ll say that the biggest obstacle was finding the time to actually sit down and write the script . I have a LOT of other projects on the go so ( along with balancing family time ) so I spent a lot of late nights carving out time to write the script .
What would you say is the most rewarding part of the process ? My two favorite moments in comics are : A . Getting artwork from the artist and seeing the characters and storyline coming to life . There ’ s no better feeling . A close second , though , is : B . Chatting with readers and fan at comic conventions
What are you hoping readers take away from this book ? I ’ d love for people to come away with a new appreciation of Juliet and Romeo . I find some people dismiss the original play and the characters as frivolous and find many of the elements clichéd . I think they doth protest too much ! There ’ s a reason the play has been so successful to this day : These are two of the greatest characters ever created and this story will highlight how fascinating and frustrating they can be .
Plus , it ’ s a really fun read !
