PRACTICE PARTNER Name: Dennis Reid Practice Location: Ottawa Speciality: Anesthesiology How long have you been an assessor? 10 years. What attracted you to the specialty of anesthesia? During my internship, I worked with some terrific anesthesiologists and found their work fascinating. I was delighted when I was offered a junior resident job in anesthesia at Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. What is the most effective way for you to participate in continuous professional development? I keep up with local and national practice guidelines, I closely follow recommendations for practice improvement from our provincial and national professional organisations. I learn something every time I do a CPSO assessment. What has been a great moment for you as an assessor? I have really enjoyed working with the staff at the College. It is a privilege to work with them. You co-chair the CPSO’s assessor network for anesthesiologists. Can you address the benefit and importance of having such a group? It is important for assessors to share experiences and ideas for improving the quality of our work. It also allows the more experienced assessors to mentor the newcomers to the group. ...continued from previous page ment program,” said Mr. Faulkner. More than 2000 assessments will be completed as part of the pathways assessment initiative by the end of 2015. As of February 2014, the College has initiated almost 500 assessments. Once data has been collected from the review of medical records by assessors and completion of the multisource feedback questionnaires, the Quality Assurance Committee provides feedback to all physicians to support professional development and continuous improvement. Initial results from MSF feedback surveys indicate that physicians are satisfied with the process and the survey tools used to collect feedback. The College will provide regular updates to the profession as this initiative moves forward, and a full report will be available in the future.
