An Interview with Graduate Jacilyn Rayl

Jacilyn Rayl was raised in Cocoa Beach , Florida . She is a graduate of Eastern Florida State College ’ s sonography and vascular programs . She is currently working as a sonographer and studying for the vascular technology ARDMS board .
What led you to sonography ? My mom had a blood clot in her leg and had to get a vascular scan done . After the procedure , she told me that she could see me doing sonography , so I did – and it led to vascular .
What do your job requirements consist of ? My job ’ s general requirements are to scan the abdominal region of the body , which contains the gallbladder , liver , pancreas , spleen , kidney , etc . Also , I scan the pelvic region of the body . I also speak and evaluate with the radiologist about the findings on patients .
Did EFSC ’ s vascular sonography program prepare you for the requirements of your job ? Yes ! Taking part in our mock clinics ( ClanDorf ) helped me . They taught us to scan quickly and to be accurate . We were taught how to fill out our tech sheets , and we were forced to become better at what we knew how to do and to discover what we didn ’ t know .
What is your fear as a sonographer ? My fear as a sonographer is missing something .
What do you like most about your job ? All the different exams I get to do every day . I see a wide variety of things .
How long did it take you to feel comfortable in your position ? I am not comfortable , and I believe you shouldn ’ t be comfortable . You should be uncomfortable because you do not know everything . You are constantly learning every day , as well as seeing and finding new things .
How did you balance your work and school lives ? My job worked with me , which helped . I set up time for my assignments , stayed organized and I kept everything in a planner , which was organized by color and had everything written down .
What are some challenges you faced in the EFSC program , and what tips would you give to others ? I struggle with working with other people ; I tend to work on my own . I would advise learning to work with others and not letting things overwhelm you . You should not be overwhelmed by the stress . Take a moment to breathe , then come back . Remember that everything given to you is doable .
