The Wall Street Journal recently published an article called “Study Finds
Limited Benefits of Stent Use for Millions With Heart Disease.”
After reading it, I’m not fully convinced that medications and dietary changes
can do the same thing a stent can do. Statins, the suggested medication, may
cause liver damage and decreased bone density in some people. They may
also make very little difference to some, and they do not produce immediate
results. Many people believe that stents have saved their lives and would
disagree with the article. I believe that stents, along with dietary changes and
medications, are the best treatment, but one should also be aware of the
options, including any associated risks, benefits and expenses.
Coronary artery bypass surgery should only be considered when the artery is
completely blocked, which is when they are suggested. However, if the option
for a stent is still available, I think that is better, as it is less invasive and offers
faster results. Still, the choice should always be left up to the patient.
