Is Call of Duty Dead?

As a franchise Call of Duty has been around for what seems like forever. The behemoth it has become is one of the biggest in the world and has dominated the market for many years. But has it started to wind down? Are they soon to be killed off by David in the forms of newer games like Titanfall and others such as Destiny?

For me Call of Duty is now more of a chore to play and I sold it because it was worth more to some other person than to me. For me and many others that I have ever played with the same is evident; the monotonous releases every year of never changing storylines and graphics is just too much. The best games they have created are back when CoD4 was out and not to forget some fun times on MW2 and World at War. The most fun I have had recently on a Call of Duty game was with Black Ops 2 and although I generally prefer Infinity Ward and Activision, Ghosts hasn’t hit the spot. Neither will whatever monstrosity Sledgehammer pull off either, remember, they made MW3 multiplayer.

But is it dying? Well, Black Ops 2 shortly after launch had seen a decline of around 15% in sales on MW3 which is a fair bit but even more surprising is the drop of around 50% drop in sales for Ghosts over BO2 shortly after launch. So from sales data it seems as if there is a large decline in sales but being as big as they are the profit margins for these figures will still be staggering and will be enough for a long time to make it worthwhile for shareholders and investors.

Personally I will likely not ever unwrap a pristine copy of the new Call of Duty game ever again, that is of course unless they happen to release a nostalgia pack of CoD4, WaW and MW2. In which case, I think their sales would skyrocket, but of course they are unlikely to do so. They seem to be heading to more micro transactions and mini DLCs to line their trousers with enough money to drown it. Although probably in the distant future, Call of Duty will probably fail sooner or later, but before they do let’s hope that they bring back the old classics in high definition on next generation consoles so we can remember what good Call of Dutys were ever like.
