Title E-Slang
Group size 12-24
Time 45-60 min
Objectives To understand specific terms connected to the Internet
Materials Papers with printed terms and definitions, sticky tape, paper and markers.
Preparation
Choose the terms and write down the definitions
Adapt the definitions if necessary according to the age
Print out the handouts with the terms and definitions
Step-by-step
Explain the rules of the game:
1 Stick the papers with the terms and definitions to the back of each participant. The task is to match the term and its definition.
The participants are not allowed to talk. But they can help each other find the match.
2 Since everyone has their couple, ask the participants to sit down next to their match. Give them 5-10 min to think of the
simple definition for their terms. The participants are suggested to read out and then make a short presentation for the others.
They can also use paper and markers to draw the explanation if needed or play them out with the partner.
Debriefing
How easy did you find your match? What was the most difficult?
Were you surprised by some definitions?
Did you find out anything new about the Internet?
Tips for facilitators
You can suggest the participants to divide into two groups not into couples for giving explanations. If there are less people than
the terms, you can add the rest of them during the second part of the activity.Be patient. Some of the participants might be not
aware enough of the terms. Therefore, you have to be prepared to answer questions and explain the terms in easy words. It
could be helpful to use visual aids.
Suggestions for follow-up
Who wants to be a millionaire?
Variations
If the group is small, you can use variation.
Draw or print out the “encryption code” on the flipchart. Prepare papers with the “encrypted” terms on the one side and their
definitions on the other.
Divide the participants into two groups. Explain that they will have a competition. They will have to decode the encrypted terms.
The group which is faster wins. The ones who were the second have to prepare the simplified definitions of the terms
