WHAT MAKES A VILLAGE ?
How strategic design will transform Canyons Village
Great shops , restaurants , services , cafés and nightlife . But most importantly , a village should be a social focal point — a place where people gather and make the village their own .
“ A village is really about people ,” says Gary Raymond , Replay Resorts ’ Managing Director . “ It ’ s about creating places that people enjoy being in . We plan the plazas , the open walkways — and the gathering spots — and then we put up buildings around that .”
The team at Replay has vast experience in creating people-oriented , pedestrian-style mountain resorts and is acting as the master developer role to help transform and create the new Canyons Village . Replay ’ s senior leadership were part of the visionary team that successfully created renowned villages at Whistler in British Columbia , Mont Tremblant in Quebec , Mammoth Mountain and Squaw Valley in California , and Les Arc in the French Alps .
Design Principles
Visual variety
Discovery . Well-executed design principles create spaces that feel natural and organic , almost like they weren ’ t designed at all . At Canyons Village , curving lanes will impart a sense of adventure and discovery around every corner .
Views . Opening up public spaces will maximize sunlight and view corridors , while intentional landscaping creates a variety of seating options .
Sunlight . Studying the sun to identify where restaurant patios and plazas should be located . Create the spots where people want to hang out .
Gathering Places . Include varied seating and special places to gather . Impromptu areas for people watching and outdoor entertainment venues .
Landscaping and Visual Variety . Adding color and natural divisions . Building heights , layering , and interesting signage adds personality .
