INTRODUCTION
Development Works: Myths and Realities
Bread for the World Institute is pleased to
introduce Development Works. Here, we tell
the stories of real people around the world
who are building better lives with the help
of effective U.S. development assistance.
Development Works uses examples, photos,
and graphics to illustrate what development
assistance actually is and does. The seven
short essays included here focus on some of
the key questions—from why development
assistance is so important and what impact
it has, to whether America can afford it and
where we should concentrate our efforts.
The United States has a long tradition of
helping people around the world who are
working to escape hunger and poverty.
Americans know that hunger is not a
partisan issue. This is why Bread for the
World has a strong track record of working
in partnership with people all along the
political spectrum—both at the grassroots
and in Washington, DC—to improve our
country’s policies so we make more progress
against hunger in the United States and
around the world.
