... the wisdom of Lockwood Dody

Note: Lockwood Dody is a ground hog who lives in a kudzu bank on the side of a country
road in the vicinity of Talmo, Georgia. Local resident, Homer, allegedly has
regular conversations with him, but, instead of doing weather forecasting as his
more famous cousins do each spring, he comments on the economy and, like most
economists, smokes a pipe.
As a result of my knees entering the fourth quarter of their functionality, I’ve discovered that swimming and
riding a bike are the only two forms of exercise that are left as options to keeping my tummy from expanding to
another trouser size. So now, as I approach his den, I slow down my “old man’s bike” to make sure I don’t miss
seeing him coming out of the kudzu. Sure enough, there he sat on his haunches, but instea
