Abiding in the Garden of Victory
By Lucinda Hale
I gaze from my
window and
reflect on new
beginnings.
Winter is the
time of year
when the
garden seems to be dormant, but like a duck
effortlessly gliding across the top of the water, much
is happening beneath the surface. The perennials,
bulbs and trees planted in the fall are developing root
systems. Next year’s insects are lying in wait under all
those piles of last fall’s leaves.
To prime our season for the successful result we
desire, we must fertilize what we want to encourage
to grow while getting rid of what seeks to destroy our
efforts. It is time to seek God for guidance, plan for
the future, visualize our dreams, and map our goals
and the action steps to achieve them. Being a gardener
is very similar to being an investor or an athlete. The
work is done in advance, looking and expecting the
rewards that are to come.

cultivating a garden. Consistency, doing a little

every day, has a powerful and cumulative effect. A
weed pulled today prevents a thousand seeds from
growing tomorrow. A perennial planted in the fall
will multiply into many that can be transplanted and
eventually shared with neighbors and friends in the
next season. A tree planted will grow and provide the
shade that many will enjoy.
God’s natural laws are eternal: we reap what we
have sown; hard work is rewarded, and we do what can
be done today rather than wait until tomorrow. Our
strength comes from our trust in God, the Master
Gardener. If we are
lacking strength, we
examine where we are,
placing our trust and
realigning ourselves.
As we gaze through
winter’s window and
it seems everything
sleeps, we picture our
lives as we want to
see them and actively
take steps to make the
vision happen.
